So is anyone actually going to do something about this, or are we just going to sit around letting him get away with whatever he wants? I thought wardens were supposed to be, you know, people who wouldn't do this kind of thing?

And this is the second time he's done it? Why is he still a warden?

What do you mean to accomplish, here?

I mean to embarrass them into proving me wrong. Or maybe I'm just pointing out the obvious things that they want brushed under the rug.

This place is completely corrupt and I'm sick of it. It's also run by idiots. I am falsely imprisoned and depowered for most of my life, I come out an angry person because of it, and the Barge's solution is to imprison and depower me again.

Once I thought I might be a Warden myself, so there would be more people who actually gave a damn about the Inmates. But I can't be part of this.

I know all this, Wanda. [Preaching to the choir here.]

But if that's you're intention, you're failing. [Well okay, he approves of the infighting, but. He'd approve of it more if he thought she was actually manipulating them, not just throwing a fit.]

If you want to show them anything, you have to be smart about it.

There's no reasoning with them anyway. Nobody gives a shit. They play at being concerned with redemption and justice, but they'll stand by and let innocent people suffer right under their noses without doing a goddamn thing.

I'll just avoid talking to them at all. There's no point. They're pushing an agenda that doesn't work, run by a being who doesn't care, which lets people graduate hours after someone they kidnapped is rescued from them, and lets Wardens screw up their Inmates' lives even further. To Hell with the Wardens. There are maybe three in the bunch who deserve anything besides contempt.

Are you trying to teach me something, or do you really feel the need to reiterate what we both already know?

Sometimes it's necessary to play a part, loathe as I am to.

Forget it. I put everything I had into being the nice, considerate girl who tries to make a home here and does things for the community. In return, I got screwed, and yelled at when I complained. My ability to even pretend to give a damn is now broken.

If you dwell on what's happened to you, then take strength from it.

[She thinks about this quietly, her bitterness stewing within her.]

Faith is fragile to begin with. I don't bother putting it into hopes and ideals.

The only faith there is to have is in action. [And he doesn't mean bitching out the wardens, he means actively taken them down.]

[Wanda's rage doesn't make her stupid, and she doesn't like where this conversation is going. Her father never saw her as anything better than a pawn, and she's wary of his parallel's counsel. Especially after last time, when it left her in an agony of conflict.]

Good for you. [her voice is flat.] Unfortunately around here actions almost never have the intended consequences.

[And a little sharply, because he still thinks she needs to grow up a little.] Should we give up, then? Bow our heads and follow their rules, as if they have any understanding for what we are?

Every time someone tries to lash out against the Wardens the only thing that happens is that the Inmates suffer as a result. I have been through multiple takeovers. They never gain anyone freedom, they never do anything to increase Inmate rights--they just kill people. Temporarily. The last time someone tried to stage a prison break we ended up stuck on a world where we were literally the walking dead. It never works. We don't have any goddamned options. We can't even die to get out of here.

You'll see. The whole reality of this place is skewed toward forcing us to bend neck. And they call it good. And they call it right. And they don't give a fuck what it does to us. And we just have to learn to live with it.

You want to put your nose in the air at me because I know I can't do anything? Then I think I'm done talking to you. [The last thing she needs right now is having the guy who may become her abuser treating her with disdain.]

[As much as he wants to help her, her attitude irks him whenever it comes up, and it's so, so easy to treat her disdainfully. She acts like a spoiled child rather than someone who understands the dangers mutants face in their worlds - let alone what they all face here.]

You're right, Wanda. We all ought to duck our heads and do as we're told. That's much better than acting on careful plans.

[She cuts the feed.]

[He's silent for a moment, listening to her feed die, and wondering if he'd ever have bothered trying to get to know her, if not for Sanitarium Island. Would it have been better if he hadn't? He never thought to have a family, not after the camp, but the idea was...tantalizing. He didn't want to give it up.]

I've already been there. [He knows he's talking to dead air, and a moment later, kills his feed too.]
